GWYNNS FALLS TRAIL PARTNERS
Making the Gwynns Falls Trail a reality required a public-private partnership. Project partners are the Baltimore City Departments of Recreation & Parks, Planning, Transportation, Public Schools, and Police, the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, the Trust for Public Land, the Gwynns Falls Trail Council, Parks & People Foundation, and the Citizens of Baltimore.
The construction and land acquisition funds for the Gwynns Falls Trail have been provided by the United States and Maryland Departments of Transportation, Maryland Program Open Space, the City of Baltimore, and several private funders. Funding for the Trust for Public Land, the Gwynns Falls Trail Council and Parks & People Foundation have been provided by the Wallace Reader's Digest Fund and other private funders.
Baltimore
City
The Baltimore City Department
of Recreation & Parks owns and manages the Trail, provides
staff to coordinate maintenance, volunteer assistance, capital improvements,
activity and educational programming, and works closely with City
Police who provide security.
The
Baltimore City Department
of Planning managed issues involved with Trail construction
and design, coordinates the capital budget, and applied for federal
and state funds.
The
Baltimore
City Departments of Public Works, Recreation & Parks, and Transportation worked together on Trail construction, coordinated
the bidding processes and provided construction oversight, as well
as Trail maintenance as necessary.
State
of Maryland
The Maryland Departments of
Natural Resources and Transportation assist with funding for the Trail project
and coordinate links to a planned regional Trail system. Natural Resources also provided environmental education opportunities
along the Trail.
Trust
for Public Land
The Trust for Public Land assisted
the City by acquiring land and rights-of-way for the Trail project,
fundraising for construction and design, facilitating the alignment
and design process, and coordinating and raising private funds for
Trail improvements.
Parks
& People Foundation
Parks & People Foundation
coordinates community involvement and stewardship activities for
the Trail through enhancement projects and by promoting volunteerism, fostering educational
and recreational programs, promoting events and activities, and
securing private funds to institutionalize the partnership, including
supporting the development of the Trail Council and Trail improvements.
Gwynns
Falls Trail Council
The Gwynns Falls Trail Council is membership organization created
to promote enjoyment and continuous improvement of the Trail. The
Council is governed by a board comprised of members of the community
and partner organizations. The Council works in partnership with
the Baltimore City Department
of Recreation & Parks to schedule and publicize events and
volunteer efforts, fundraise, and to provide linkages to other areas
and activities in the region.
